Little Big Man

We were cruisin’ a car show recently and Michael Tan had his streamliner on display with this turbocharged, Brent Sullivan – an owner of the auto parts store down town. The little 122ci four-banger uses a single  turbo from Turbonetics and 840 hp “real easily” according to Sullivan. According to Tan, it’s the world’s fastest four-cylinder. It has set a record at 309 mph in G/Blown Fuel Steamliner and has run as fast as 335 mph. The new goal with partner Bruce Watson is to push the little four-cylinder to over 400 mph. That’s 586 feet per second.

DreamGirls

Bill Condon knows a thing or two about Oscar. The proud owner of an Academy Award for his Gods And Monsters screenplay, the New Yorker was also nominated for his Chicago script. And now it looks as if he might be in line for a directing gong, such is the decent job he’s done of bringing Dreamgirls to the big screen. A Broadway smash, the Henry Krieger-Tom Eyen musical tells the story of the Supremes, only with the names changed to protect innocent and guilty alike. In Condon’s picture the Diana Ross-esque role of Deena Jones falls to Beyonce Knowles who continues to suggest that her skills extend beyond booty-shaking. As for the other Motown movers and shakers, you don’t have to squint too hard to see who Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson are really meant to be. Since Condon knows his way around musical theater, Dreamgirls isn’t beset with the staginess that’s spoilt many a Hollywood adaptation. And while you can’t help feeling a real film about the rise and fall of The Supremes would have greater impact.

Dates with a Difference

I’ve been in Dubai now for five months and my boyfriend and I have tried to experience as much of the country as soon as we arrived, but I feel I’m slowly winding down to a routine of brunch and shopping, stretching my wallet and the lights more than I can keep up with!  I was hoping you could help us with some interesting date ideas,  other than the typical dinner date.
